SECTION 1: URBAN FANTASY BOOKS SIMILAR TO FATED When you read Fated by Benedict Jacka, it's no surprise that you are reminded of Jim Butcher's style in the Dresden Files series. Heck, Jacka's main character, Alex Verus, even makes the joke about a wizard for hire in Chicago! Nice connection and clearly Butcher’s work influenced this novel, but still Jacka’s story stands on it’s own. While there are many subthemes weaving throughout Fated by Benedict Jacka, it all leads back to power. The elitist wizard class system pretends to have opposed sides, but everyone is out for their own gain. The main character, Alex Verus, wants nothing to do with the corrupt politics, yet he has to understand them and navigate his way through if he wants to survive. You can also support your local library and rent this and other Urban Fantasy stories through the Libby app SECTION 3: WHAT I DID NOT LIKE ABOUT FATED If I had to pick something negative about Fated by Benedict Jacka, the potential romance growing between Alex Verus and Luna Mancuso felt forced for the sake of the genre. It never fully went to a sexual relationship, which I appreciated, but I feel that doorway was left open purposefully to appease the fans. SECTION 4: WHO WILL LOVE AND HATE FATED Anyone who enjoys well-crafted worlds of magic blended with morally ambiguous social class system issues should adore Fated by Benedict Jacka. If you're not into the detective/mystery genre, or if you prefer highly physical characters versus the brainy-sarcastic type, this may not be your book. Section 5: L. Rigdon’s star rating of Fated I give Fated by Benedict Jacka five out of five stars. Jacka found a way to transform an underplayed magical discipline — divination/probability — into a coveted magical gift that put our main character, Alex Verus, into some wonderfully impossible situations! Plus, unlike other books about mages, this one gave a great high-level view of the complexity of the world without getting dragged into the weeds. You finish this first book of the series eager to discover where else everything goes.
