Section 1: Urban Fantasy Books Similar to Involuntary Time Traveler
Section 2: Most Powerful Themes Represented in Involuntary Time Traveler
Historical racial tensions prove a significant focus of Involuntary Time Traveler by Natasha D. Lane, highlighting the themes of equality and power. There is also the aspect of how those in power try to help or hinder those beneath them. In reality, people in power can only change things to a point before they risk a loss of power.
Keyona, the time traveler and main character, doesn't fully understand the politics and diplomacy of the era. She wants to see instant change —a modern and youthful perspective— and gets frustrated by those she deems not doing enough.
As an older reader, it's tough for me to relate to a character half my age who hasn't witnessed people spend decades trying to build a better world. I just see her as impatient and someone who thinks she knows better. Would I love to see our world change for the better overnight? Yes. But would such quick actions last without taking the time to build a foundation to support those changes? I don't think so. Too often, people want that instant gratification and forget that the journey and experience are vital to the longevity of change.
Section 3: What I Did Not like about Involuntary Time Traveler
Second, the author does the ultimate time travel cliché: Where should you send someone failing their French and history classes? Back to the French Revolution, of course! Totally made me roll my eyes!
Finally (moderate *SPOILER* warning), the book ends on a useless cliffhanger —IMHO. Not only that but NOTHING is resolved. I find that a cheap trick to try and get people to read the next book. Yes, it works with TV shows, but it annoys me with books.
Section 4: Who Will Love and Hate Involuntary Time Traveler
Section 5: L. Rigdon’s star rating of Involuntary Time Traveler
I think what would've worked better would be if the author had brought someone from the past to Keyona's present. It would have included lots of culture shock, timeline displacement, and possibly altered reality that only Keyona and those involved with the time travel spell would notice. Mixing a character from the past with such a promising modern world of magic and machines would have been far more exciting.
Plus, the author could have closed out nearly all the storylines and still left one open to get readers to the next book without the story stopping abruptly for no reason!
